George

cups of granulated white sugar,

a little at a time, stirring as you go .

step 2

Stir the water until all the sugar has dissolved .

It may be necessary to turn up the heat .

Even a few undissolved grains will cause

the experiment to fail .

step 3

If you want to add food colouring put in

several drops. You can also add flavouring

for example a dash of fruit juice or a drop

of vanilla extract if you like ask a grown up

to pour the liquid into the glass jar. Be careful

as it will be very hot.

step 4

moisten one half of the ice lolly stick with water

and then roll it in sugar. lower the coated half

of the stick into the jar , making sure it

doesn't touch the bottom or sides .

Use a clothes peg to hold the stick

in place.

step 5

Cover the top of the jar with a sheet of kitchen roll

to keep dust out, then place the jar in a cool , dry

place.

step 6

After a few days , crystals should start to form

on your stick. When they don't seem to be growing

any bigger, take the stick out and tuck in !
